Semis - vs TPC: 2-0 W

Summit came into the annual Windy City Classic confident as they had
previously won the highly competitive tournament five out of the past six
years.
Summit's day started out a little rough as their starting libero Krystian
sprained his ankle on the first warm up swing of the day. Chris Fash and
Collin McMillan arrived late due to a long line at Dunkin Donuts for their
coffee. Therefore Jeremy Desiron was thrown into the outside hitter
position for the first match. Summit cruised in their first three matches
with 2-0 wins over Chicago Coast, TPC 2 and KOA behind the serving of Chuck
Warner, the blocking of James Claney, and the defense of Willie Flores who
stepped in to play libero for Krystian.
Summit's final pool play match was against Silverbacks from Minnesota. Mark
Lau came out of his indoor volleyball retirement to bolster up the leftside
position due to the absensce of Mike Dauernheim and JT Wenger who were
unable to attend. Mark struggled at the beginning of the match, but was
able to work it out to pull out a split and solidify the second overall seed
in the playoffs and a first round bye.
Summit seminfinal match was against local rival TPC, who was able to defeat
Milwaukee's Best in their quarterfinal match. Summit controlled the net
with the combination of 6'-11" Colln McMillan, 6'-7" Chris Fash and 6'-9"
Mark Lau. Krystian taped his ankle and was able to play which helped the
ball control and passing. Art Kulan passed nails all day which made the
offense run smooth. Summit defeated TPC in 2 to advanced into the finals to
play the #1 seed Creole from New York.
Creole's team was stacked with open players Paul Bocage, Victor Batista,
Mike Salak, Elvis Rodrigues, and former summit player Tarik Rodgers. Summit
appeared to be the underdog, but was able to control the net again with
their size and score points on offense with great efficiency thanks to the
ball control of Art and Krystian. Chris Fash was dropping bombs from the
rightside which frustrated the block of Creole. In the end Summit captured
their sixth Windy City championship in seven years.
